Have you ever scrolled through Facebook and noticed an ad for an item that you had recently Googled? What about an item you had texted someone about? Or had a conversation about? Or even just thought about?

Have you ever wondered how those companies knew to show you that ad? It’s because your social media told them to.

Social media sites are able to gather enough information about you to be able to predict what you are likely searching for, thinking about, and interested in. Then they use those predictions to sell ads to companies based on how likely you…

Social media is an amazing resource for companies to build their brands, engage with followers, and keep up with relevant trends and conversations as they happen. Business owners can put as much or as little into paid advertising as they choose, but free advertising will always exist via reviews, tags, and word-of mouth marketing from satisfied customers.

In 2020, Netflix entertained more than 200 million subscribers worldwide by allowing users to stream their choice of 3,781 movies and 1,940 TV shows including tons of Netflix Original content. This is a big jump from the original mail-order movie rental model that Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph started back in 1997.

The company reported a marketing budget of $2.65 billion in 2019, a year before the global pandemic that forced millions to shelter-in-place with nothing but the internet for entertainment. But how can a company with that much money to monitor be sure that they are spending responsibly?

But there are also ways to reach even more specific audiences based on hobbies, interests, and active engagement with similar content: niche social platforms.

The idea of intentionally putting your brand in front of a…

A big misconception about food insecurity is that it only affects the homeless, the jobless, or the uneducated.

This video from the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma’s “Fighting Hunger…Feeding Hope” campaign follows Tori, a single mom with a full-time job who partially raised her daughter out of her car while she put herself through school. Tori…

20 years ago, many people were convinced the internet and computers were a fad. That they would have their 15 minutes of fame and then fade into obscurity like The Macarena and Beanie Babies.

10 years ago, they said the same about Social Networking websites.

But now, with platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube each reporting more than a billion monthly users per site, it doesn’t seem like social media is going anywhere any time soon.

But why should you care?

Why should businesses allocate resources to building and maintaining a social media presence? Why create accounts? Why develop and…
